Kharkiv Oblast is situated in northeastern Ukraine, bordering Russia’s Belgorod Oblast. The city of Kharkiv is the oblast's administrative center. Russian forces captured and then lost territory in Kharkiv Oblast in 2022, following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Russia currently occupies a small percentage of land in Kharkiv Oblast after a renewed offensive in northeastern Kharkiv Oblast in May 2024, but does not hold any major settlements.
