The Kyiv Independent welcomes opinion article submissions on any topic related to Ukraine for online publication in our Opinion section.
Here are a few things to consider before submitting your work to us:
Anyone with unique, informed insight on a topic related to Ukraine and the region can submit an article to us. We will also reach out to those we believe have a valuable take on a given subject and encourage them to contribute.
Authors looking to submit an op-ed should have the experience and/or education relevant to the topic they are writing about.
We recommend that your submission be under or around 1,000 words.
When writing, use language that is clear and concise, and avoid excessive use of jargon unless it is accompanied by an explanation.
We welcome submissions of previously published articles, provided that the necessary permissions have been obtained.
We do not accept articles submitted anonymously or under pseudonyms.
All the facts in submitted op-eds need to be correct and based on credible sources. Include links to sources wherever possible.
How to submit or pitch an op-ed
Please send your submission or pitch to Teah Pelechaty, opinion editor: [email protected]. Email subject: “Kyiv Independent Op-Ed Submission”
In your email, please include:
- The author’s full name;
- Confirmation of the author’s contact email address (please note that the email address you choose will be visible on our site);
- A photo of the author to accompany the author’s bio;
- Any information you deem relevant regarding the submission.
All entries must be submitted in Microsoft Word format.
Despite the high volume of submissions received, we will do our best to respond to you within one week if your article is accepted for publication.
An approved pitch isn’t a guarantee that your work will be published.
While the Kyiv Independent usually does not provide compensation for the publication of opinion pieces, authors will be publicly credited, providing a platform on which to display their work. Active links to the author’s personal websites can be published upon request.
If your article is accepted, one of our editors will revise your submission for grammar, length, and writing quality.
Please provide in-text links to sources wherever necessary, as well as any supporting documents, for the editing process!
Any edits made will not alter the author’s opinion.
We will send you our proposed revisions prior to publication to ensure you are comfortable with any changes.
We sincerely appreciate your contribution.
