Russian attacks kill at least 13 people, injure 90 across Ukraine over past day

Russian attacks killed 13 people and injured at least 90 others across Ukraine over the past day, local authorities said on Aug. 9.

Overnight, Ukrainian forces downed 174 Shahed-type drones and five Banderol missiles, the Air Force reported on Aug. 9. Russian missiles and drones struck 22 targets, according to the military. Debris from downed drones or missiles caused damage at six locations. Several missiles did not reach their targets due to electronic warfare countermeasures.

Russia’s overnight attacks mainly targeted Odesa Oblast in southern Ukraine, according to the Air Force.

Attacks on Odesa Oblast injured at least 12 and left part of the city of Odesa without electricity and water supply.

In Kyiv Oblast, Russia killed three people in the village of Pukhivka, a three-year-old boy and his grandparents, President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram. The strikes hospitalized a further four people, including the child's parents, the 15-year-old brother, and a neighbor who came to help them but was injured in a second strike.

Russian forces also launched six ballistic missiles targeting civilian infrastructure in Kyiv, according to Zelensky. One person was killed as a result of the attack on the capital.

"More pressure is needed — new sanctions that will prevent Russia from producing these ballistic missiles. And our people absolutely need more protection. Anti-ballistic systems, interceptor missiles for Patriot, SAMP/T, NASAMS, and HAWK systems, as well as our F-16s — all of these work and help protect lives when they are here in Ukraine, rather than sitting in warehouses thousands of kilometers away from Russia’s attacks on human life," Zelensky wrote.

Russia killed three people and injured 37 others in an attack on Kharkiv Oblast, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported on Telegram.

Moscow struck a high-rise residential building in the Saltivskyi district, destroying the 7th to 10th floors, according to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration. Amog the killed are two men aged 50 and 66.

In Donetsk Oblast, Russian attacks killed three people and injured five others, said Governor Vadym Filashkin. Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, Dobropillia, and other areas across the region came under attack, according to the governor.

In Sumy Oblast, Russia killed three people and injured five others, the oblast's military administration said. Air raid alert had been on in the region for almost the entire day, for 23 hours and 49 minutes, according to the administration.

In Kherson Oblast, Russian forces injured 10 people, including two children, Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Oblast Military Administration, reported. The attacks targeted residential building and other civilian infrastructure, according to Prokudin.

In Zhytomyr Oblast, three people were injured, of whom one was hospitalized with burns, said Vitalii Bunechko, head of the Zhytomyr Oblast Military Administration.

Eleven people were injured in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, said Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Military Administration. Among the injured are four children.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russia carried out 974 attacks, injuring two, according to the local military administration.

Mykolaiv Oblast was under multiple drone attacks, with one person getting injured, according to local officials.
