Kherson Oblast in Ukraine’s south had a population of around 270,000 people at the beginning of 2022. Russia currently occupies about 73% of Kherson Oblast. The administrative center of the region is the city of Kherson, which was captured by Russia in February 2022 and liberated after eight and a half months.Kherson Oblast borders Mykolaiv Oblast, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. To the south of Kherson Oblast is the Black Sea and Crimea.
