Olena Goncharova is the Head of North America desk at The Kyiv Independent, where she has previously worked as a development manager and Canadian correspondent. She first joined the Kyiv Post, Ukraine's oldest English-language newspaper, as a staff writer in January 2012 and became the newspaper’s Canadian correspondent in June 2018. She is based in Edmonton, Alberta. Olena has a master’s degree in publishing and editing from the Institute of Journalism in Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. Olena was a 2016 Alfred Friendly Press Partners fellow who worked for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for six months. The program is administered by the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia.

Australia has temporarily closed its embassy operations in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv “due to the increased risk,” Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne said on Feb. 22. The move followed the temporary suspension of Australia's embassy in Kyiv a week earlier.

Sergiy Kyslytsya slammed Russia's decision to recognize the independence of the Kremlin-backed separatist regions of eastern Ukraine. Kyslytsya also said that "the U.N. is sick." "It’s been hit by a virus spread by the Kremlin. Will it succumb to this virus? It’s in the hands of the members. Russia copy pasted word by word the decree for Georgia, the copying machine in Kremlin works very well. Who is next from the United Nations?" he said, holding up a copy of Russia’s document that recognized Georgia’s "breakaway" Abkhazia region in 2008.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres sharply criticized Russia's actions to send troops to eastern Ukraine during the council meeting. “The decision of the Russian Federation [is] a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and inconsistent with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations,” Guterres said. France’s U.N. ambassador Nicolas de Rivière said “Russia is choosing the path of confrontation,” while Britain’s ambassador, Barbara Woodward, added that “Russia has brought us to the brink. We urge Russia to step back.”

The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency meeting late on Feb. 21 at Ukraine’s request after Russia sent troops to eastern Ukraine. U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield rebuffed what Russian President Vladimir Putin called a "peacekeeping operation" in Ukraine's Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts. "This is nonsense, we know who they are," Thomas-Greenfield said.
