Governor: Insignificant ammonia leak reported in Donetsk Oblast.

According to Pavlo Kyrylenko, a branch of the ammonia pipeline Tolyiatti—Odesa was damaged due to active hostilities, and a cloud of ammonia is moving towards Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast. The leak may affect five settlements in the oblast, including Hladosove, Dacha, Mykolaivka Druha, Otradivka, and Opytne. There is no danger to the city of Bakhmut, the governor added. Rescuers are working in the area.

Biden: US won’t send Ukraine rocket systems able to reach Russia.

U.S. President Joe Biden said on May 30 that the U.S. would not send Ukraine rocket systems that could reach into Russia. Ukraine earlier urged the West to provide it with longer-range weapons. It was not clear whether Biden referred to the systems Ukraine had requested.

First Russian soldier to be tried for rape in Ukraine.

The Prosecutor General's Office said it had completed the first investigation of rape during Russia's war in Ukraine. According to the investigation, a Russian soldier broke into a house in a village in Brovary District, Kyiv Oblast, in March, killed a man and, along with a comrade, repeatedly raped his wife. The case was sent to court.

Mariupol official reports Russian 'filtration camps' near Estonian border.

Petro Andriushchenko, an advisor to the Mariupol mayor, said Russia used the “filtration camps” near its border with Estonia to prevent Ukrainians who had been forcibly deported to Russia from escaping to Estonia. According to the official, Mariupol residents who were in such a camp said that the conditions there were much harsher compared to "filtration camps" in the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine.

Ex-President Poroshenko leaves Ukraine on 3rd try.

Petro Poroshenko crossed the border into Poland on May 30 after having been barred from crossing the first two times. Poroshenko's allies have accused the authorities of unfair treatment of the former president, who is President Volodymyr Zelensky's political opponent. Poroshenko said he was leaving the country to attend a European People's Party summit in Rotterdam and promote the interests of Ukraine.

Ukraine launches counterattack south of Kryvyi Rih.

Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih military administration, reported late on May 29 that the Russian forces lost 63 troops and 19 units of military equipment, including modern T-72 tanks, a Grad multiple launch rocket system, artillery, helicopters and one SU-35 aircraft.

General Staff: Russia has lost 30,350 troops in Ukraine since Feb 24.

Ukraine’s General Staff reported on May 30 that Russia had also lost 1,349 tanks, 3,282 armored vehicles, 2,258 vehicles and fuel tanks, 643 artillery pieces, 205 multiple launch rocket systems, 93 surface-to-air missiles, 174 helicopters, 207 airplanes, 507 drones, and 13 boats.

AFP: NATO has right to deploy in eastern Europe.

NATO is no longer pressed by past commitments that prevented the bloc from deploying its forces in eastern Europe, NATO's deputy secretary-general Mircea Geoana told AFP on May 29. According to the official, Russia has "voided of any content" the NATO-Russia Founding Act, by attacking Ukraine and halting dialogue with the alliance. The Act specified that both sides agreed to work to prevent any build-up of conventional forces in agreed regions of Europe, to include Central and Eastern Europe.

Russian shelling damages 59 residential buildings in Donbas, kills 3 civilians.

The Joint Forces Operation reported on May 29 that Russian shelling in Donbas destroyed and damaged 59 residential buildings, a power station, and a community center. At least three civilians were killed and two were injured in Pokrovsk and Bakhmut districts of Donetsk Oblast. Information on the rest of Donetsk and Luhansk regions is still being clarified.

Institute for the Study of War: Ukrainian forces successfully conduct counterattack near Kherson Oblast border.

The U.S. think tank  reported on May 29 that Ukrainian forces successfully conducted a “limited” counterattack near the Kherson-Mykolaiv oblast border. It seems unlikely that Ukrainian forces will take back significant amounts of territory “in the near term,” but it may force Russia to deploy reinforcements to Kherson oblast, “which is predominantly held by sub-standard units,” and disrupt Russian operations.

The Novyi Buh City Council reported late on May 29 that the central part of the city has suffered significant damage due to Russian airstrike. There is no information on casualties available at the moment.

Zelensky: ‘Russia lost its own future and any cultural ties to the free world’.

In his latest national address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “Russia has already lost not only the battle for Kharkiv, not only the battle for Kyiv and the north of our country. It lost its own future and any cultural ties to the free world. They all burned down. One third of the Kharkiv region is still under occupation. We will definitely liberate the entire territory.”

Ukraine's military destroys Russian ammunition depot in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Operational Tactical Group “East” reported that 39 Russian troops were killed on May 29. One infantry fighting vehicle, one armored personnel carrier, five armored fighting vehicles, two artillery systems, three heavy artillery tractors, one fuel tanker, and three unmanned aerial vehicles were also destroyed.

Lavrov: Capturing all of Donbas is 'absolute priority' for Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the occupation of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts' entire territory remains the priority. He added that the residents of other Ukrainian regions would need to "decide their future" themselves. Since February, Russia has toned down its rhetoric, switching from an attempt to seize control over Ukraine's entire territory to a more narrow focus on the Donbas.

Zelensky fires SBU chief in Kharkiv for alleged inaction during war.

During his evening address following his visit to Kharkiv Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 29 that law enforcement agencies would investigate Roman Dudin, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) branch in Kharkiv Oblast. Zelensky said that Dudin had failed to contribute to the city's defense since Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February.

CNN: Russian ship with grain allegedly stolen from Ukraine arrives in Syria.

New satellite images provided by Maxar Technologies show the bulk carrier Matros Pozynich arriving in the Syrian port of Latakia on May 27, estimated to carry about 30,000 tons of grain. CNN reported that it is one of the three ships that have been loading grain in Sevastopol's port in Russian-occupied Crimea since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Earlier, Ukrainian authorities estimated that Russian troops had stolen more than 400,000 tons of grain in occupied territories.

RFE/RL: EU countries fail to reach deal on Russia sanctions.

Rikard Jozwiak, an editor at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, said on Twitter that EU representatives will meet once again on May 30 to discuss the sixth sanctions package. Hungary is demanding exemptions for a potential oil embargo, and there are also disagreements on whether to ban Russian citizens from buying real estate in Europe, he said.

Ukrainian drones strike missile, drone arsenal in Russia's Bryansk Oblast.

Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) struck on June 28 the 1060th Material-Technical Support Center in the city of Bryansk, Ukraine's General Staff said. The facilities store a Russian missile and drone arsenal, Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing a source in HUR.

"Andrzej has been with Ukraine since the first days of the war, always side by side, a reliable ally and a true friend. This is undoubtedly the level of relations we want to preserve and strengthen with Poland," President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
