Macron not ruling out seventh package of EU sanctions against Russia.

Following EU's sixth sanctions package, French President Emmanuel Macron said on May 31 that “nothing could be ruled out” in terms of additional sanctions in the coming weeks. He also expressed hope that an agreement with Russia could be reached on allowing grain exports from Ukraine.

Kuleba: Ukraine working on UN-led operation to ensure grain export.

According to Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine is working on an international United Nations-led operation alongside partners to provide a safe corridor for exporting grain. Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s ports prevents the export of about 22 million tons of grain, creating a threat of famine in countries dependent on the grain, according to Ukrainian officials.

Court seizes Russian company Tatneft assets in Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Tatneft supplies oil products for the Russian Ministry of Defense. 115 real estate objects were seized, including oil depots and gas stations, as well as 118 fuel trucks. Authorities estimate that the value of the seized assets can reach up to $67 million.

Verkhovna Rada dismisses ombudsman Denisova.

234 lawmakers voted to dismiss Lyudmyla Denisova. Earlier, Ukrainian journalists and activists have expressed concerns over Denisova's reports of rapes by Russian soldiers, that were sometimes seen as insensitive or disrespectful towards survivors.

Austrian chancellor: Next package of Russia sanctions won't include gas embargo.

Karl Nehammer claimed that it would be much more difficult to replace Russian gas than Russian oil. Earlier the European Union had agreed to impose an embargo on Russian oil with a "temporary exemption" for pipeline oil. European countries have faced criticism for effectively financing Russian aggression against Ukraine by paying billions of dollars for Russian oil and gas.

General Staff: One more Russian offensive towards Sloviansk fails.

Ukraine's General Staff said that Russian troops had unsuccessfully tried to storm the village of Dovhenke near Sloviansk, Donetsk Oblast. Russian troops are also trying to storm Zolote, Komyshuvakha, Nyrkove, Berestove, Pokrovske and Dolomitne near Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, the General Staff said.

UK Defense Ministry: Russia achieves local successes by massing forces.

The ministry said that the strategy of massing forces and fires in a relatively small area had enabled Russian troops to achieve local successes. In contrast, during the first month of the large-scale invasion, Russia suffered military setbacks after scattering its forces over a huge area. The ministry said that Russia's capture of Lyman in Donetsk Oblast will help it to achieve its main operational goal, which remains the encirclement of Sievierodonetsk and the closure of the pocket around Ukrainian forces in Luhansk Oblast. Russia's political goal is likely to occupy the full territory of the Donbas, the ministry added.

Commission chief: EU to eject Sberbank from SWIFT.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union had agreed on ejecting Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, from the SWIFT messaging system for international payments as part of the sixth package of sanctions. The package also envisages a partial embargo on Russian oil and banning three more Russian propaganda outlets.

Russians hit Sloviansk with Iskander missiles, killing 3 people and wounding 6.

Donetsk Oblast Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko reported early on May 31 that three people have been killed and six injured after Russia hit the city of Sloviansk with missiles. One building of a local school and at least seven high-rises were damaged. The exact number of victims will not be known until the completion of rescue operations which are currently underway.

Over 1,000 companies have left Russia since Feb 24.

According to data analyzed by Kyiv School of Economics, at least 1,037 western companies have left Russia. As of May 29, companies that declared a complete withdrawal from Russia had $32.5 billion in revenues and $19.9 billion in capital. More than half (50.2%) of foreign companies have already announced their withdrawal from the Russian market, 21.2% have reduced current operations and hold off new investments, but another 28.6% remain in the country.

At least eight journalists have been killed while reporting on Russia’s war in Ukraine since Feb. 24, while the total death toll has reached 32 people, according to Ukraine's Institute of Mass Information.

Institute for the Study of War: Domestic dissent within Russian military circles continues to grow.

The U.S. think tank writes in their latest assessment that the Kremlin is facing discontent not from Russians opposed to the war as a whole, but military and nationalist figures angry at Russian losses and frustrated with shifting Kremlin framing of the war. Russian officials are unable to use the same ideological justifications for the invasion in the face of clear setbacks, and a lack of concrete military gains within Ukraine will continue to foment domestic dissatisfaction with the war.

Lithuania to send additional military equipment.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvidas Anushauskas announced that his country will deliver more military assistance to Ukraine and the next shipment will include anti-drone and thermal imaging equipment, as well as Bayraktar drone. This is in addition to a package that was announced earlier which will include armored vehicles, trucks and SUVs.

Official: EU agrees to partial Russian oil ban.

Charles Michel, president of the European Council, announces on May 30 that the EU has come to an agreement to ban 2/3s of oil imports coming to the EU from Russia, in an attempt to limit Russia's funding for the war in Ukraine. It remains unclear when the ban will go into effect or whether countries which previously opposed the embargo will be exempt from the measure.

Turkey offers Putin peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country was ready to host a meeting between Russian, Ukrainian and UN delegations. If both sides, Kyiv and Moscow, find common ground, Turkey may also take part in a possible observation mission in Ukraine. Erdogan's comments came after phone calls with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Roberta Metsola: EU can’t afford not to impose additional sanctions on Russia.

The President of the European Parliament called the uncertainty within the EU “the worst signal we could show,” while Ukraine currently needs “hope and prospects.” President Zelensky said Russia seeks to divide the EU. “Now we observe how the Russian offensive in Donbas is destroying our cities and at the same time European unity is crumbling,” he said.

Ukrainian drones strike missile, drone arsenal in Russia's Bryansk Oblast.

Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) struck on June 28 the 1060th Material-Technical Support Center in the city of Bryansk, Ukraine's General Staff said. The facilities store a Russian missile and drone arsenal, Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing a source in HUR.
