Poland terminates gas contract with Russia ahead of schedule.

The contract, signed in 1993, was valid until the end of 2022, but Poland decided to terminate it earlier due to Russia's war against Ukraine, reaffirming "the Polish government's determination to become completely independent of Russian gas," Polish Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa said on May 23. "We have always known that (Russian gas giant) Gazprom is not a reliable partner," she said.

Russian forces fire missiles on Zhytomyr Oblast.

One missile was shot down and another damaged railway infrastructure in the town of Korosten, but no casualties were reported, Zhytomyr Oblast Governor Vitaly Bunechko said. This is the third missile attack in Zhytomyr Oblast in the last three days.

Russian soldier given life sentence for killing civilian.

A Ukrainian court sentenced Vadim Shishimarin on May 23. Shishimarin, the first Russian soldier standing trial in Ukraine for war crimes, had given a detailed account of how he shot the 62-year-old man in Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast during Russian troops’ retreat from there.

Medvedchuk testifies against Poroshenko in treason case.

Pro-Kremlin lawmaker Viktor Medvedchuk claimed that ex-President Petro Poroshenko had organized a court ruling in 2015 to transfer Prikarpatzakhidtrans, which owns a Ukrainian oil product pipeline, from the Ukrainian government to Russia's state oil pipeline monopoly Transneft. Medvedchuk also said that Poroshenko had asked him to negotiate with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to make Transneft sell Prikarpatzahidtrans to companies controlled by Poroshenko in 2016. Medvedchuk also claimed that Poroshenko had organized coal supplies from Russian-occupied areas in the Donbas in 2014-2015, according to video footage published by the Security Service of Ukraine. Both Medvedchuk and Poroshenko have been charged with treason in the coal supplies case. Poroshenko's defense denied the accusations.

Russian troops shell Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with rockets.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Valentyn Reznychenko said that Russian forces had shelled the vicinity of the town of Apostolove in the region's Kryvy Rih District with Uragan multiple rocket launchers. No casualties were reported.

Update: 1 killed, 4 injured in Russian airstrike on Malyn, Zhytomyr Oblast.

Malyn Mayor Oleksandr Sytailo reported late on May 22 that one Ukrzaliznytsia railway employee was killed. Three other railway employees and one citizen were wounded in the attack. Sytailo added that the attack damaged local railway infrastructure, around 150 residential buildings, several shops and cafes, and industrial factories in the area.

Ukraine’s parliament bans Russian war symbols.

On May 22, the Verkhovna Rada banned the symbols “Z” and “V,” which have been used by Russia to promote its war. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for them to be permitted for educational or historical purposes.

Institute for the Study of War: Russian forces likely preparing to resume offensives on Ukraine’s southern axis.

The U.S. think tank said Russian troops are likely preparing for Ukrainian counteroffensives and protracted operations in southern Ukraine. Citing Ukraine’s military, Russian troops in the region are building secondary lines of defense, bolstering air defense systems, conducting reconnaissance, and shelling Ukrainian positions, indicating that they are prepping for subsequent offensives.

Explosion in Enerhodar injures self-proclaimed ‘mayor,’ his bodyguards.

Self-proclaimed mayor of temporarily occupied Enerhodar, Andrii Shevchyk, and his bodyguards were injured in a blast at the entrance of his apartment building early on May 22. Enerhodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov confirmed the accident and said they are being treated at a local hospital. “We can conclude that the collaborator was the target,” said Orlov.

Josep Borrell: 'The time to push forward European defense is now.'

Depleted stockpiles resulting from EU military support to Ukraine since the start of Russia's war point to shortfalls in European security and underinvestment in the EU's defense industry for a number of years, the EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell wrote in a blog post on May 22. Russia's assault on Ukraine "represents a tectonic shift of the European security landscape," Borrell said.

Bloomberg: Russia’s Aeroflot to face shortage of aircraft parts.

The Russian flagship carrier, which is currently under U.S. sanctions, will be forced to scrap some of its aircraft within the next three months to provide spare parts for its fleet. Before Russia's all-out war, the carrier operated flights to 56 countries, compared to 13 countries by mid-May.

Russia's crude exports fall to lowest level since February.

Seaborne crude flows averaged 3.12 million barrels a day over the four weeks to July 6, a 3% decline from the previous period ending June 29, according to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. That's the lowest level recorded since the four-week period ending Feb. 23.
