Deadly Russian attack in Kyiv region kills 3, including child

Russia launched an attack against Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on Aug. 8, killing three people, including a child.

The region has been battered by aerial assaults throughout spring and summer, as a critical air defense shortage leaves the capital exposed to Russian ballistic missiles.

Strikes in Kyiv Oblast's Brovary district killed three people on Aug. 8, Kyiv City Administration Head Tymur Tkachenko reported. A child is among the victims.

Three more people in Brovary were injured, including another child.

The attack damaged a residential building, cars, and outbuildings in the area. A fire also broke out at a non-residential building, according to Tkachenko. Emergency crews are continuing to work at the affected sites.

"Russia continues to terrorize the civilian population," Tkachenko said.

The latest strike on Brovary, a suburb east of Kyiv, comes as the community is still reeling from a mass Russian attack that killed eight people on a train platform. The attack marked one of the most intense Russian bombardments in Brovary since the start of the war.

Shortly after midnight on Aug. 8, Ukraine's Air Force began alerting residents that waves of drones were approaching Kyiv and the surrounding region. Explosions were first heard in the city at around 12:45 a.m. local time, according to Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground.

Less than 15 minutes later, another round of blasts rocked the city. At around 3 a.m., as rescue crews were putting out fires in Brovary, Kyiv Independent journalists reported more explosions and said ballistic missiles were attacking the capital.

The Air Force also warned that Russian drones and guided aerial bombs were bound for other areas of the country. Explosions has been reported in Dnipro, the fourth-largest city in Ukraine.

Attacks are ongoing, and the full extent of the damage and casualties is not yet known.

While Russia has terrorized Ukrainian cities with aerial attacks throughout the full-scale invasion, the intensified bombardments of 2026 exploit Ukraine's air defense crisis, leading to deadlier and more devastating strikes.

Russia has been launching barrages of ballistic missiles at Kyiv and other cities with increasing frequency, destroying apartment buildings, critical energy facilities, and civilian infrastructure.  Without a sufficient supply of Patriot interceptors, these targets are nearly defenseless against Russian ballistic missiles.  

The Defense Ministry reported on Aug. 7 that Ukraine managed to intercept only 29 of the 195 ballistic missiles Russia launched at the country in July.

Russia's most recent mass attack hit Kyiv and the surrounding region only 48 hours earlier, killing 17 people and injuring nearly 30 others overnight on Aug. 5. 24 None of the 24 ballistic and four hypersonic missiles Russia launched during the assault were intercepted, Ukraine's Air Force said.
