The Kyiv Independent welcomes opinion article submissions on any topic related to Ukraine, Russia, and their neighbors for online publication in our Opinion section.

Here are a few things to consider before submitting your work to us:

What makes for a good op-ed?

A strong op-ed effectively communicates a clear argument while engaging readers with the author’s unique voice. Here are key elements that contribute to a compelling opinion piece:

Originality and perspective: Your op-ed should present a fresh and informed perspective on a relevant topic. We encourage contributions that provide original insights or challenge prevailing narratives.

Clear argumentation: Every op-ed must articulate a clear thesis statement, outlining the main argument or recommendation. Support this thesis with logical reasoning and well-structured points, typically including three key reasons to bolster your stance. End with a thought-provoking conclusion that reinforces your main argument and leaves readers with a sense of closure.

Clarity and conciseness: Use clear, straightforward language to convey your points. Avoid excessive jargon, ensuring your writing remains accessible to a broad audience.

Length: Aim for a word count of around 800 words. This length allows you to thoroughly develop your argument while keeping the reader’s attention.

Personal experience or expertise: Ground your arguments in your personal experience or professional expertise.

Connection to current affairs: Link your op-ed to timely events or ongoing public conversations. Connecting your argument to current affairs enhances its relevance and engages readers who are interested in the issues shaping their world.

Accuracy and credibility: Ensure that all facts presented are accurate and supported by credible sources. Properly cite your sources using in-text hyperlinks.

FAQs

When will I hear back about my submission?

We aim to respond to all submissions within three days. If you haven’t heard from us by then, you may assume we have decided to move forward with other submissions.

Can I submit an op-ed that has been published elsewhere?

We prefer original pieces that have not been published in other outlets. If your submission has appeared elsewhere, you must disclose this to the Kyiv Independent and obtain express permission for reuse from the publication in which it originally appeared.

Can I pitch an idea for an op-ed instead of submitting a full piece?

Yes, you can pitch an idea! Please send a brief outline or summary of your concept, and we will consider it. Please note that an approved pitch isn’t a guarantee that your work will be published.

Who can submit an op-ed?

Anyone with a unique perspective or insight on relevant topics is welcome to submit an op-ed. We encourage contributions from individuals, experts, activists, and community members, provided that their submissions are informed by personal experience or expertise.

Can I submit anonymously?

We do not accept anonymous submissions. All op-eds must include the author’s name, photo, and bio to maintain transparency and accountability. Op-eds cannot be signed by an organization; if submitted on behalf of an organization, they must be authored and signed by an individual representative.

Will I receive feedback on my submission?

Due to the high volume of submissions we receive, we may not be able to provide detailed feedback on every piece. However, if your op-ed is selected for publication, we may suggest edits.

Will my op-ed be edited, and to what extent?

Your op-ed may be edited for clarity and conciseness before publication. We will send you our proposed revisions prior to publication to ensure you are comfortable with any changes. Any edits made will not alter the author’s opinion.

Are there any payment or compensation options for published op-eds?

The Kyiv Independent does not usually provide compensation for the publication of opinion pieces.

We sincerely appreciate your contribution.
