Russian attacks kill at least 41, injure 67 across Ukraine as glide bombs strike Zaporizhzhia

At least 41 people were killed and 67 others injured in Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past day, as Russian glide bombs struck Zaporizhzhia, local authorities said on Oct. 9.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian glide bombs destroyed and damaged residential buildings, killing one person and injuring seven others, including a child, Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Defense Council, reported.

Across the whole of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, two people were killed and 18 injured in Russian attacks over the past day, Fedorov added. Russian forces launched 1,039 strikes against 51 settlements in the oblast.

Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with 136 drones, including 93 jet-powered Shahed-type drones, Ukraine's Air Force said. Air defenses shot down or suppressed 114 drones, including 77 jet-powered Shaheds. The Air Force reported drone strikes at eight locations, while debris from intercepted drones fell at seven locations.

In Donetsk Oblast, Russian attacks killed 35 people and injured another 24 over the past day, Governor Vadym Filashkin said. Of those killed, 32 were in Kramatorsk and three in Bilenke.

In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, two people were killed and three others injured, the regional military administration said. Russian forces launched more than 60 attacks on districts of the oblast using drones, artillery, and aerial bombs.

In Sumy Oblast, one person was killed and 14 others injured, including two children, the local authorities said. Two 12-year-old boys were injured in a drone attack. Russian forces launched nearly 40 attacks against 21 settlements in the oblast over the past day.

In Kherson Oblast, four people were injured, including a child, the regional military administration said. Russian forces targeted critical and social infrastructure as well as residential neighborhoods, damaging 12 private houses, gas pipelines, and vehicles.

In Kharkiv Oblast, three people were injured in Russian attacks on 17 settlements, Governor Oleh Syniehubov said. Two men aged 51 and 53 were injured in Zolochiv, while a 72-year-old woman was injured in Khotimlia. Russian forces used aerial bombs, multiple-launch rocket systems, and drones, including FPV drones, in the attacks.

In Chernihiv Oblast, an elderly man was injured after a Russian drone struck a courtyard in a village in the Liubech community, the regional military administration said. Overnight, a Russian Geran-type drone also struck a hypermarket on the outskirts of Chernihiv, causing a fire.

In Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, a 67-year-old man was killed in a Russian attack on the city of Ivano-Frankivsk, regional Governor Svitlana Onyshchuk said.

The latest announcement comes as Kyiv experienced widespread power outages on Oct. 8 following a Russian attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Over 3 million residents in the capital lost power in what officials described as "an attack on one of the energy facilities important for the city of Kyiv."

The railway operator initially reported that the passenger train's driver suffered a leg injury and four passengers required medical attention. The crew of the electric locomotive was unharmed.
