The July 9 deadline set by the Trump administration approaches, after which the U.S. may impose tariffs of up to 50% on imports from the European Union if no trade deal is reached. Negotiations between Washington and Brussels are ongoing, with reports indicating both sides are close to a framework agreement. This deal would set a 10% baseline tariff in exchange for continued talks and potential concessions on the automotive sector. The EU aims to avoid escalating a trade war that could harm key industries while preserving strategic autonomy in digital policy and technology regulation.
The second week of Denmark’s presidency of the EU will be marked by several key events. On July 7, the Eurogroup will convene to discuss the ongoing economic recovery and financial stability across the Eurozone. The Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) will meet on July 8, focusing on budgetary policies and energy market developments. Meanwhile, the European Parliament is scheduled to hold plenary sessions (July 7-10), with debates centered on climate legislation and migration policy reforms.
The BRICS Summit in Brazil (July 6–7) will once again proceed without Russian President Vladimir Putin attending in person due to the ICC arrest warrant. While BRICS aims to promote global governance reform, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine threaten to overshadow Brazil’s vision. Led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil seeks to strengthen its leadership role within the Global South, building on its active international engagement, including hosting the 2024 G20 summit and preparing for the 2025 UN climate conference COP30.
Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) will take place in Rome, Italy, on July 10–11. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will host leaders of partner countries to discuss rebuilding strategies. The conference will focus on restoring infrastructure, attracting investment, modernizing energy, integrating Ukraine’s economy into the European market, and advancing anti-corruption reforms. Key decisions on new international funds and regional reconstruction are expected, highlighting ongoing global support amid rising recovery costs estimated at $411 bn.
